Katherine gateway
Guide updated · verify live status with NT Parks
The sleep-and-fuel town that makes Nitmiluk make sense: last reliable services before either sector, ~30 km to the Gorge, ~60 km to Leliyn. Darwin is the fly-in, not a casual same-day base.
- Best for: Overnight base, fuel, food, Visitor Pass on Wi-Fi, Darwin fly-in staging
- Time: One night before a Gorge morning; two nights if you want both sectors
- Katherine is on the Stuart Highway. Gorge Road leaves town for the 13-gorge precinct. Leliyn is north on the Stuart then Edith Falls Road. Darwin is about 3.5 hours further north.

Why Katherine is the operator default
Sleep here if you want a cool Gorge morning. Fuel here. Buy the Visitor Pass on Wi-Fi here. Screenshot maps here. The precincts are not towns.
Peak June–August beds sell out. Book the room when you book the cruise, not the night before the lookout. Commercial stay searches on this site may be affiliate. Official camping never is.
Two roads leave town
Gorge Road: about 30 km northeast to the Nitmiluk Centre. Leliyn: Stuart Highway north, then Edith Falls Road — about 60 km. They do not meet inside the park for casual drivers.
If you want both sectors, two Katherine nights is the plan. One night is one sector. Darwin overnight on this site exists because the 14-hour day trip is a poor first visit.
Darwin is a fly-in
Land, hire a car or join a tour, then decide whether tonight is Katherine. If you stay in Darwin and drive down at 8 am, you will meet the heat at the Centre.
A commercial Darwin day tour can replace the self-drive if you refuse to sleep here. You still pick one sector. You still do not add Leliyn “on the way to the airport.”
Town bed vs park camp
Leliyn drive-in and bush camps: parkbookings.nt.gov.au before arrival. Gorge Tourist Precinct: Nitmiluk Tours. Jatbula camps: parkbookings plus walking fee plus ferry. None of those replace a Katherine motel if you cannot get a site — or if mixed ages need air-con.
Gateway beds do not unlock walk-up camping. Arrive with the booking you actually hold.
The night-before admin
On hotel Wi-Fi: Visitor Pass if required, park-open page, roadreport, BOM Katherine, cruise time. Pack 3 L+ carrying capacity. Agree out loud: one sector tomorrow.
If any official layer fails in the morning, stay in town. Heat illness is not worth a lookout photo.
Highlights at a glance
- Last fuel and food before both public sectors
- Hotel / motel beds when park camps are full or too much hassle
- Wi-Fi to buy the Visitor Pass and screenshot park-open / roadreport
- Sensible Darwin fly-in: land, drive south, sleep, then one Gorge day
Practical tips
- Fuel both directions. Do not assume a bowser at the Gorge or Leliyn.
- Buy the Visitor Pass before you leave Wi-Fi if you need one.
- Screenshot both sector maps — Leliyn reception is poor.
- June–August: book Katherine beds when you book the cruise.
- Nominate a driver rotation on Darwin–Katherine days if two adults can drive.

Baruwei Lookout

Leliyn Trail
moderateThe strong day icon of the Leliyn (Edith Falls) sector: a short loop with views of the falls and Edith River, plus upper-pool swimming when signed open. May shorten to lookout / upper pool only in the wet. This is a different park visit from the Gorge — about 90 km by road.

Itineraries that use this area
Full day from Katherine (a same-day Darwin return is not recommended)
One day: Nitmiluk Gorge
One Gorge-sector day: early drive from Katherine, Visitor Pass already bought, Baruwei Lookout in the cool, then a booked cruise or a longer walk — not both at peak heat. Leave Leliyn for another day.

Two days from a Katherine base
Two days: Gorge + Leliyn
Day 1 Gorge (lookout and/or cruise). Day 2 Leliyn trail and swim-if-open. About 90 km between sectors — that is why this is two days.
Open plan →
Two nights / one full Gorge day (do not squeeze Leliyn)
Darwin fly-in: overnight Katherine, one Gorge day
Land Darwin, drive or coach to Katherine the same afternoon, sleep, then one honest Gorge day. Return north the next morning. Leliyn waits for a longer trip.

Should I sleep in Katherine or Darwin?
Katherine if you want a Gorge morning. Darwin if you are flying and will not add a night — then accept a long day or a commercial tour, and one sector only. See the Katherine-or-Darwin article on this site.
How far is Katherine from each sector?
About 30 km to Nitmiluk Gorge on Gorge Road. About 60 km to Leliyn via the Stuart Highway and Edith Falls Road. About 90 km between the two precincts.
Is there a bus into the park?
There is no regular public transport into either precinct. You drive, join a commercial tour, or walk Jatbula with a booked finish transfer.
Does a Katherine hotel include park camping?
No. Park-managed camps are parkbookings only. Gorge Tourist Precinct is Nitmiluk Tours. A town bed is a town bed.
Other Nitmiluk areas
The sectors do not substitute for each other. Open the guide that matches tomorrow morning.
Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge)
Best for: First visit, cruises, Baruwei, Jatbula start, cultural orientation
The 13-gorge sandstone system on the Katherine River — Nitmiluk Centre, cruises, canoe portages, Baruwei walks and the Jatbula start. This is the primary visitor precinct, about 30 km from Katherine on sealed Gorge Road.

Leliyn (Edith Falls)
Best for: Swimming when signed open, short loop walk, Jatbula finish, quieter-than-Gorge camp (still book ahead)
The park’s second public sector: Edith River falls, plunge pool and upper pools, the Leliyn Trail, and the usual Jatbula finish. About 60 km from Katherine and about 90 km by road from the Gorge.
Open area guide →
Jatbula country (Gorge to Leliyn)
Best for: Booked, fit, experienced walkers in the dry-season window
The multi-day corridor between the two public sectors: a traditional Jawoyn route along the escarpment edge. Not a day-walk area. Bookings, ferry, one-night camps and a real finish plan are the entry ticket.
