Itineraries
Guide updated · verify NT Parks the morning you go
These plans are for real Katherine-region days — two sectors, heat, crocodiles and bookings included — not a “see everything” checklist. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free planner PDF / HTML anytime.
Every itinerary defers to NT Parks for track status, swimming and alerts. Jatbula only appears where the plan names it — and only when you hold official bookings.
Which plan fits you?
- One-day Gorge — first visit; Baruwei and/or a cruise. Leliyn waits.
- Two-day Gorge + Leliyn — both public sectors without a huge drive in one day.
- Jatbula overview — booked multi-day only; not a day walk.
- Family easy — one cruise or one signed swim, then shade.
- Heat-aware — build-up and wet-season mornings only.
- Darwin overnight — fly-in, sleep in Katherine, one Gorge day. Not a 14-hour day trip.
If two plans both sound good, pick the shorter one. You can always do more once you are there. You cannot add hours to the drive home.

Full day from Katherine (a same-day Darwin return is not recommended)
One day: Nitmiluk Gorge
First visit focused on the 13-gorge precinct
One Gorge-sector day: early drive from Katherine, Visitor Pass already bought, Baruwei Lookout in the cool, then a booked cruise or a longer walk — not both at peak heat. Leave Leliyn for another day.

Two days from a Katherine base
Two days: Gorge + Leliyn
Seeing both public sectors without a huge drive in one day
Day 1 Gorge (lookout and/or cruise). Day 2 Leliyn trail and swim-if-open. About 90 km between sectors — that is why this is two days.

5–6 walking days plus buffer nights
Jatbula overview itinerary
People deciding whether to book — read the official trail notes as well
A planning skeleton for the 62 km Gorge-to-Leliyn walk: briefing and ferry, one night per camp, long Sandy Camp day, finish logistics at Leliyn. Book official products first; then use this to sequence the human parts.

Half to full day
Family / easier day
Mixed ages who want water or a boat, not a plateau epic
Pick one: a Gorge cruise plus a short precinct wander, or Leliyn if swimming is signed open. Skip Jatbula, Southern overnights and any “quick both sectors” idea.

Short morning only
Heat-aware / build-up day
September–April visits when heat is the whole story
Assume extreme heat on escarpment walks. Start at first light, choose either a short lookout or a cruise, carry 3 L+, and be in shade before anyone is unwell. Wet-season floods and crocodile closures can cancel the plan — staying in town is the right call.

Two nights / one full Gorge day (do not squeeze Leliyn)
Darwin fly-in: overnight Katherine, one Gorge day
Fly-in visitors who refuse a 14-hour Darwin day trip
Land Darwin, drive or coach to Katherine the same afternoon, sleep, then one honest Gorge day. Return north the next morning. Leliyn waits for a longer trip.
