Why Leliyn is its own visit
Leliyn is the swim-and-falls half of Nitmiluk. People who try to add it after a Gorge cruise afternoon mostly collect highway and heat. Treat it as a morning of its own, or as day two of a Katherine base.
The landscape is still Jawoyn country and still crocodile country. Paperbark and pandanus do not mean unsupervised kids at the waterline.
If you only have one Nitmiluk morning, pick Gorge or Leliyn on purpose. Gorge is the orientation and cruise product. Leliyn is the swim product when open. They are not interchangeable icons on the same road.
Swimming honesty
When surveys and signs say open, the upper pools and main pool are why families come. When they say closed, you look from the bank. There is no workaround.
Never swim at dawn or dusk in closed water. Do not assume a tour brochure overrides a ranger sign.
Wet rock around the falls is how ankles go. Closed tape is not a suggestion. If the loop is shortened to lookout or upper-pool only, that shortened walk is still a good Leliyn hour.
Camping
Leliyn drive-in camping is park-managed: book and pay on parkbookings.nt.gov.au before arrival. Category and facilities change — [VERIFY] the live listing. Display the tag. Generators and fires have restrictions.
Sweetwater Pool is part of the Jatbula / bush system, not extra overflow for the drive-in campground.
Peak dry-season nights sell out. A Katherine motel is the backup, not a walk-up site at the falls. This site never affiliates park camping.
Jatbula finish, not a Jatbula camp
Most Jatbula itineraries end here. Finishers who want a night at Leliyn book the drive-in camp separately. The last trail night is usually Sweetwater or the published last camp — not a free pad by the day-use car park.
Day visitors share the pools with tired walkers in peak season. Give them space. Do not treat their finish as a photo prop.
When to come — and when to stay in town
Dry season is the usual swim window and the busy window. Arrive early in June–August and school holidays. Midday is hotter and fuller.
In the wet, the loop can shorten and swimming can close after surveys or rain. Flooded access is possible. If the park-open page or roadreport looks ugly, Leliyn can wait. A closed waterfall is still a waterfall you can visit next year.
Getting there — not via Gorge Road
From Katherine: about 40 km north on the Stuart Highway, then about 20 km sealed Edith Falls Road. About 60 km all up. From the Gorge precinct it is about 90 km — you go back toward Katherine and out the other road.
Sealed 2WD in normal conditions. Check roadreport in the wet. No regular public transport. No Centre desk. Screenshot the map in town. Fuel in Katherine.
What the Leliyn Trail actually is
Published as about 2.6 km, Grade 3, about an hour — [VERIFY] on the official walks page. It may shorten to lookout or upper-pool only after rain. That shortened walk is still a good hour.
Carry water on the loop even if you plan to swim. Wet rock around the falls is how ankles go. Closed tape is not a suggestion. Sweetwater Pool is a Jatbula / bush booking, not a day-visitor extra camp.

Practical tips
- Arrive early in June–August and school holidays.
- Carry water on the loop even if you plan to swim.
- Screenshot bookings and maps — reception is poor.
- Combine with the Gorge as a two-day plan, not a 14-hour Darwin day trip.
- Read swim signs before anyone changes into bathers.
- Fuel in Katherine. Do not assume a shop at the falls.
Facilities & services
- Day-use parking, toilets; campground facilities vary by site — verify live
- No Nitmiluk Centre desk — rely on signs and pre-downloaded maps
- Unreliable or no mobile coverage
- Picnic / day-use shade — use it; the rock around the pools is not a lounge
Confirm toilets, parking and open facilities on the day via official sources and on-site signage.

FAQ — Leliyn
Short planning answers. Official NT Parks signs and the park-open page always win over this guide.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
How far is Leliyn from Katherine Gorge?
About 90 km by road between the two public sectors. From Katherine town Leliyn is about 60 km (Stuart Highway then Edith Falls Road).
Is the Leliyn Trail always open?
It is published as a 2.6 km Grade 3 loop of about an hour, but it may shorten to lookout or upper-pool only in the wet. Confirm on the official park pages and on-site signs.
Can I camp without a booking?
No for park-managed sites. Book on parkbookings.nt.gov.au before you arrive. There is no on-site payment. Display the tag. Gorge Tourist Precinct camping is a different, commercial product via Nitmiluk Tours.
Is Leliyn safer to swim than the Gorge?
It is managed the same way: surveys and signs, not guesswork. It is a popular swim when open. It is still crocodile country. If it is closed, stay out.
Is there a shop or fuel at Leliyn?
Treat it as none. Fuel and last food in Katherine. Confirm any campground facilities on the live parkbookings listing — they change.
Can I add Leliyn after a Gorge cruise the same day?
You can drive it. You will spend the cool hours on the highway. A two-day Katherine plan is the one that still has a walk in it.

Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge)
Best for: First visit, cruises, Baruwei, Jatbula start, cultural orientation
The 13-gorge sandstone system on the Katherine River — Nitmiluk Centre, cruises, canoe portages, Baruwei walks and the Jatbula start. This is the primary visitor precinct, about 30 km from Katherine on sealed Gorge Road.

Jatbula country (Gorge to Leliyn)
Best for: Booked, fit, experienced walkers in the dry-season window
The multi-day corridor between the two public sectors: a traditional Jawoyn route along the escarpment edge. Not a day-walk area. Bookings, ferry, one-night camps and a real finish plan are the entry ticket.

Katherine gateway
Best for: Overnight base, fuel, food, Visitor Pass on Wi-Fi, Darwin fly-in staging
The sleep-and-fuel town that makes Nitmiluk make sense: last reliable services before either sector, ~30 km to the Gorge, ~60 km to Leliyn. Darwin is the fly-in, not a casual same-day base.
