Nitmiluk walks & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify NT Parks
Start with a clear Gorge vs Leliyn vs Jatbula decision. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on the official walks page and the Katherine-region park-open page. Heat, crocodile surveys and wet-season flooding change the product.
Decide before you lace up
- Gorge morning: Baruwei Lookout first. Add the Loop only if heat and energy allow. Southern links (Windolf and beyond) are a different commitment.
- Swim / falls morning: Leliyn Trail at the other sector — about 90 km by road from the Gorge. Swim only where signed open.
- Booked multi-day: Jatbula — ferry, one night per camp, finish at Leliyn. Not a day-walk upgrade.
Stacking Baruwei, Windolf and a Leliyn transfer on the same hot afternoon is the classic first-visit failure. Pick the table row that matches energy, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Quick comparison (planning only)
| Walk / lookout | Effort | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jatbula Trail | hard | Typically 5 days / 4 nights or 6 days / 5 nights | Fit, experienced walkers who can book months ahead |

| Baruwei Loop | moderate | About 2 hours typical | Walkers who want more than the lookout but not a Southern overnight |
| Southern Walks | hard | Half day to overnight (pre-booked camps only) | Experienced walkers who want gorge views, rock art at a respectful distance, and optional overnight |
| Leliyn Trail | moderate | About 1 hour typical | Swim-and-view day at the park’s second sector |
Moderate
Baruwei Lookout
moderateThe usual first walk from the Nitmiluk Centre: a climb to escarpment views over the picnic area, Gorge and 17 Mile Valley. Short, but exposed to heat, with water tanks en route. Add the longer Baruwei Loop only if energy and temperature allow.
- Grade
- Grade 3 — formed climb, heat and uneven rock
- Time
- About 1 hour typical
- Distance
- About 1.8 km return

Baruwei Loop
moderateContinues along the escarpment from the Baruwei climb for a half-morning of gorge-country walking. Same start node as the lookout. Still a heat walk. Confirm the signed loop versus longer Southern links before you commit.
- Grade
- Grade 3 — escarpment loop, heat and uneven rock
- Time
- About 2 hours typical
- Distance
- About 4.8–4.9 km loop

Leliyn Trail
moderateThe strong day icon of the Leliyn (Edith Falls) sector: a short loop with views of the falls and Edith River, plus upper-pool swimming when signed open. May shorten to lookout / upper pool only in the wet. This is a different park visit from the Gorge — about 90 km by road.
- Grade
- Grade 3 — loop with steps, heat and wet rock
- Time
- About 1 hour typical
- Distance
- About 2.6 km loop

Hard / multi-day
Jatbula Trail
hardSignature multi-day walk on a traditional Jawoyn route along the western Arnhem Land escarpment edge: sandstone plateau, woodland, monsoon-forest pockets and riverine camps. One night only at each designated camp. Start after a booked ferry; finish at Leliyn. Numbers are strictly limited.
- Grade
- Grade 4 — moderate–difficult; pack, heat and remote country
- Time
- Typically 5 days / 4 nights or 6 days / 5 nights
- Distance
- About 62 km one-way (Nitmiluk Gorge → Leliyn)

Day returns or pre-booked overnights at Dunlop Swamp, Smitt Rock or Eighth Gorge. Spectacular when you respect heat, water and cultural sites.
- Grade
- Grade 3–5 depending on link — verify each track
- Time
- Half day to overnight (pre-booked camps only)
- Distance
- Day returns to multi-day (Windolf ~9 km return range; longer links to Eighth Gorge)

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk in Nitmiluk?
Most first-timers at the Gorge sector start with Baruwei Lookout (about 1.8 km return, Grade 3). Leliyn Trail is the first walk if you chose the Edith Falls sector. Jatbula is a booked multi-day, not a first-afternoon upgrade.
How hard is the Jatbula Trail?
Published as about 62 km one-way, Grade 4, typically 5–6 days with a pack in heat. Numbers are capped. Ferry and briefing required. Confirm live notes on the official Jatbula page.
Can I do the Gorge and Leliyn walks the same day?
The sectors are about 90 km apart by road. A two-day plan is the sensible one. Trying both in one day is mostly driving.
Do I need a 4WD for these walks?
Not for Baruwei, the Loop, standard Southern day starts or Leliyn in normal conditions — sealed 2WD from Katherine. Always check roadreport.nt.gov.au. Overnight bush and canoe access is more demanding.
Can I swim after a walk?
Only where signs say open after ranger crocodile surveys. Gorge 1 is permanently closed to swimming and canoeing. Leliyn is the usual swim day when open. Be Crocwise.
