Book Leliyn, Sweetwater, Southern bush, Jatbula and canoe camps on parkbookings.nt.gov.au before arrival — no on-site payment. Display the tag. Gorge Tourist Precinct (powered/unpowered/caravan, some cabins) is Nitmiluk Tours, not this website.
Katherine puts both public sectors in reach: ~30 km to the Gorge, ~60 km to Leliyn, sealed roads in normal conditions. It is the correct base for early Baruwei, cruise check-in, and Jatbula briefing nights.
Darwin is where most people fly in. A same-day Darwin–Gorge–Darwin loop is a very long, hot day. Stay in Katherine if the park is why you came. Darwin day tours exist if you do not want to change hotels — still treat Leliyn as optional.

Katherine
Main base. About 30 km to Nitmiluk Gorge, about 60 km to Leliyn. The usual choice for a two-sector weekend and for Jatbula briefing nights.

Fly-in secondary base. About 3.5 hours south on the Stuart Highway to Katherine, then branch. Fine for a long trip; a poor base for a serious early Gorge morning.
