Park overview

Nitmiluk National Park is jointly managed Jawoyn country in the Katherine region: a 13-gorge sandstone system on the Katherine River, a second public sector at Leliyn (Edith Falls), and the Jatbula Trail between them. Most day visitors see one precinct. Treat the two public sectors as two visits — they are about 90 km apart by road.

Always verify live conditions on the official NT Parks park page and the Katherine region park-open page. This site is independent and unofficial. It does not show live closures.

How to use these area guides: pick the precinct that matches time and bookings, then open it for what not to get wrong, getting-there, fees and related walks. NT Parks sets swimming status, camping and official rules.

How to choose an area

Pick the precinct that matches the morning you actually have. The two public sectors are about 90 km apart — they are not one stop.

Recommended order on any trip

  1. 1Decide Gorge, Leliyn or Jatbula — not all three.
  2. 2Buy the Visitor Pass if you need one (interstate / overseas).
  3. 3Check park-open, roads and swim signs the same morning.
  4. 4Complete one honest morning. Stop there if heat or energy says so.
  5. 5Add the other sector only on a second day.
  6. 6Jatbula only with live bookings — ferry, camps, walking fee.

Geography in plain English

Think of Nitmiluk as two public car parks on different roads, plus a walking corridor between them that you cannot drive. The Gorge precinct sits about 30 km northeast of Katherine on sealed Gorge Road. Leliyn sits about 60 km from town via the Stuart Highway and Edith Falls Road. The Jatbula Trail is the 62 km traditional route along the escarpment edge from the Gorge ferry to Leliyn.

Katherine is the sleep-and-fuel town. Darwin is a fly-in, about 3.5 hours further north — a base for flights, not for a casual same-day Gorge + Leliyn loop. There is no regular public transport into either precinct. Commercial cruises, canoe hire and some Gorge beds are Nitmiluk Tours products; park-managed camps are parkbookings only.

Quick comparison

Planning ranges only — verify roads, swim signs and bookings the morning you go.

Do not merge these areas in your head

  • Gorge Road does not go to Leliyn (~90 km apart).
  • Gorge 1 is permanently closed to swimming and canoeing.
  • Visitor Pass ≠ camping ≠ walking fees ≠ ferry.
  • Jatbula is not a Gorge afternoon or a Leliyn day walk.
  • Katherine beds are not park camps.

FAQ — picking an area

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Which area should I open first?

Nitmiluk Gorge if this is your first visit. Leliyn if you came for a signed swim. Jatbula country only if you already hold (or are deciding whether to hold) multi-day bookings. Katherine if you are still choosing a bed and a road.

Can I treat Gorge and Leliyn as one area?

No. They are two public sectors about 90 km apart on different roads. Open both area guides only if you have two mornings.

Is Katherine inside the national park?

No. It is the sleep-and-fuel town. The park starts at the precincts. A Katherine hotel does not include a camp site.
