Gorge / Leliyn day vs Jatbula
Almost every first Nitmiluk plan fails or succeeds here — not at the lookout. Choose the path that matches bookings, heat and drive time. Do not invent a hybrid that stacks a cruise, Windolf and a Leliyn transfer onto one hot afternoon.

Baruwei Lookout
moderateThe usual first walk from the Nitmiluk Centre: a climb to escarpment views over the picnic area, Gorge and 17 Mile Valley. Short, but exposed to heat, with water tanks en route. Add the longer Baruwei Loop only if energy and temperature allow.

Leliyn Trail
moderateThe strong day icon of the Leliyn (Edith Falls) sector: a short loop with views of the falls and Edith River, plus upper-pool swimming when signed open. May shorten to lookout / upper pool only in the wet. This is a different park visit from the Gorge — about 90 km by road.

Jatbula Trail
hardSignature multi-day walk on a traditional Jawoyn route along the western Arnhem Land escarpment edge: sandstone plateau, woodland, monsoon-forest pockets and riverine camps. One night only at each designated camp. Start after a booked ferry; finish at Leliyn. Numbers are strictly limited.

Gorge realism is not optional reading
- There is no single “Nitmiluk ticket.” Pass, camping, walking fees and ferry are separate.
- Gorge 1 is permanently closed to swimming and canoeing. Follow today’s signs, not old photos.
- The two public sectors are ~90 km apart. Gorge Road does not go to Leliyn.
- Heat on the escarpment is the main day-to-day risk. Carry 3 L+ and start early.
- Mobile is patchy or absent once you leave the Centre. 000 needs reception.

One Gorge-sector day: early drive from Katherine, Visitor Pass already bought, Baruwei Lookout in the cool, then a booked cruise or a longer walk — not both at peak heat. Leave Leliyn for another day.

Do I need a ticket or entry fee for Nitmiluk?
There is no single park ticket. Interstate and overseas visitors need an NT Parks Visitor Pass. NT residents are exempt (proof may be requested). Camping, Jatbula walking fees, cruises and the start ferry are booked separately. Buy the pass only at parkbookings.nt.gov.au.
Is Nitmiluk Gorge the same as Leliyn (Edith Falls)?
They are two sectors of the same national park, about 90 km apart by road. Gorge Road goes to the 13-gorge precinct. Leliyn is via the Stuart Highway and Edith Falls Road. Plan them as two visits or a two-day Katherine trip.
Can I swim at Katherine Gorge?
Gorge 1 is permanently closed to swimming and canoeing. Other swimming is only where signs say open after ranger crocodile surveys. Leliyn is the usual swim day when open. Be Crocwise.
What should I do first on a first visit?
Most first-timers do the Gorge sector: Nitmiluk Centre, Baruwei Lookout, and/or a Nitmiluk Tours cruise. Add Leliyn on a second morning. Jatbula is a booked multi-day, not a first-afternoon add-on.
Can I do Nitmiluk as a same-day trip from Darwin?
You can drive it (~3.5 hours to Katherine plus 30 km to the Gorge). It becomes a 14-hour day very easily. Sleep in Katherine the night before if you want a cool morning. Leliyn does not fit on the same day.
Do I need a 4WD?
Not for the main Gorge precinct, Baruwei or Leliyn in normal sealed conditions. Check roadreport.nt.gov.au — Maud Creek can flood in the wet. There is no regular public transport into either sector.
Is this site official NT Parks?
No. This is an independent unofficial guide published by Farming Domains (Ian Piggott). For alerts, swimming status, camping and official rules use NT Parks and parkbookings.nt.gov.au only.
