Two days: Gorge + Leliyn
Best for: Seeing both public sectors without a huge drive in one day
Guide updated · verify NT Parks the morning you go
Day 1 Gorge (lookout and/or cruise). Day 2 Leliyn trail and swim-if-open. About 90 km between sectors — that is why this is two days.

This is the default “we have a long weekend in Katherine” plan. Each sector gets a cool morning. You do not need Jatbula to have a real Nitmiluk trip.
Book Leliyn camping only if you want to sleep there; Katherine motel nights are simpler for mixed groups.
The failure mode is sneaking a sunset Leliyn drive after Day 1 “to see if we like it.” You will like it less at 38 °C on the Stuart Highway.
Verify swim status, park-open and roads each morning. Day 2 can become a lookout-only morning if the pools are closed — that still counts.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NT Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before Day 1
Two maps, one pass
Visitor Pass if required. Screenshot Gorge and Leliyn maps while you have Wi-Fi. Pack swimwear only as a maybe. Agree: Day 1 = Gorge only. Day 2 = Leliyn only.
Day 1 morning
Gorge sector
Same as the one-day Gorge plan: early Baruwei and/or booked cruise. Visitor Pass already sorted. Fill bottles at the Centre. Ask what is closed.
Day 1 afternoon
Recover in Katherine
Food, fluids, early night. Do not add a sunset Leliyn drive “to see if we like it.” Charge devices. Check BOM and park-open for tomorrow.
Day 2 morning
Leliyn sector
Stuart Highway north, then Edith Falls Road (~60 km from town). Read swim signs before anyone changes. Walk the 2.6 km loop if open. Swim only where signed. Carry water on the loop even if you plan to swim.
Day 2 midday
Shade check
If the loop is shortened or swimming is closed, the lookout or bank view is the product. Do not scramble around tape. Eat, hydrate, leave while you still have patience.
Day 2 afternoon
Back to Katherine or Darwin
Leave before heat and tiredness catch up. Darwin is still ~3.5 hours from Katherine — do not leave Leliyn at 4 pm and expect an easy flight.
Packing
- 3 L+ water
- Swimwear + rashie (only if swimming may be open)
- Dry bag for phones
- Wide-brim hat + SPF 50
- Electrolytes
- Grip shoes that can get wet
- Offline maps for both sectors
Kit searches live on the gear hub · park fees never affiliated.
Parking & access tips
- Two different car parks on two different roads. Screenshot both maps.
- Leliyn reception is poor — download offline maps in Katherine.
- Gorge Road does not go to Leliyn. Do not follow a pin blindly.
- Leliyn day-use fills in June–August — arrive early.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Jatbula
- Southern overnight
- Same-day both sectors
- A third “quick lookout” after Leliyn on the way to Darwin
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Long-weekend visitors with a Katherine base
- People who want both public sectors without a 14-hour day
- Families who can do one honest morning per day
Decision gates
- If Day 1 already emptied the tank: Day 2 can be Leliyn lookout only
- If swim signs are closed: you still had a falls morning — do not invent a swim
- If roads fail: cancel the sector, do not invent a back way
What success looks like
- Two cool mornings, two different landscapes
- Nobody driving the Stuart half-asleep
- Honest notes for whether Jatbula is even a future idea
Related trail guides
- Baruwei LookoutThe usual first walk from the Nitmiluk Centre: a climb to escarpment views over the picnic area, Gorge and 17 Mile Valley. Short, but exposed to heat, with water tanks en route. Add the longer Baruwei Loop only if energy and temperature allow.
- Leliyn TrailThe strong day icon of the Leliyn (Edith Falls) sector: a short loop with views of the falls and Edith River, plus upper-pool swimming when signed open. May shorten to lookout / upper pool only in the wet. This is a different park visit from the Gorge — about 90 km by road.
