Things to do in Nitmiluk
Guide updated · verify live activities with NT Parks and Nitmiluk Tours
Most first visits revolve around a Gorge cruise and/or Baruwei Lookout, with Leliyn as a second morning when swimming is signed open. Overnight Jatbula is a different sport. A booked tour does not override crocodile signs. Do not try to collect every sector on a first visit.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, camping bookings, walking permits and ferry tickets are never affiliated.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually a cruise or Baruwei). Do not stack Windolf and a Leliyn transfer onto the same hot afternoon.
Heat / croc bail-out
Shade, a shortened loop or staying in Katherine beat a forced swim or plateau walk. Closed water stays closed. Bail-outs are competence.
Jatbula filter
Ferry, one night per camp, finish plan. If the group has never packed in heat, stay on day walks. Jatbula is earned.
- 1
Gorge cruise
First-visit icon · book direct · Gorge 1 closed to swim
The usual way to see the sandstone walls without a pack. Book Nitmiluk Tours directly. Confirm which gorges, how long you are on the water, and whether a swim stop is even possible. A cruise ticket is not a swim permit.
- 2
Baruwei Lookout
Grade 3 · ~1 hour · Gorge sector
The first Gorge-sector climb from the Centre — about 1.8 km return, Grade 3. Do it in the cool. A complete first visit can stop here plus a cruise and still succeed.
- 3
Leliyn (Edith Falls) swim & loop
Second sector · signed swim only · ~60 km from Katherine
The usual swim day when ranger signs say open. Separate sector — about 90 km from the Gorge. The 2.6 km loop may shorten in the wet. Be Crocwise. Last year’s photo is not a permit.
- 4
Baruwei Loop
Moderate · same start as the lookout
More escarpment after the lookout — about 4.8 km, still Grade 3, still heat. Only if water and temperature allow. Do not drift onto Southern links without a plan.
- 5
Southern walks (Windolf & beyond)
Harder · heat · overnight only if booked
Deeper Gorge-sector walking — Windolf toward Pat’s Lookout / Southern Rockhole, rock art at a respectful distance, optional booked bush camps. Not a first-hour add-on after the cruise jetty.
- 6
Canoe & own vessel
Booked · portages · river-level critical
Extra rules and bookings. You carry the canoe between gorges. Gorge 1 is permanently closed to canoeing. Wet-season restrictions are common. Do not hire one on the off-chance.
- 7
Jawoyn country & rock art
Every visit · respectful distance · no invented culture
Jointly managed Jawoyn land. Some published Southern walks pass art sites. View from a respectful distance. Do not touch. Do not invent cultural stories. Use official and Jawoyn sources for depth.
- 8
Jatbula Trail
Advanced · 5–6 days · typically Jun–Sep
Booked 62 km multi-day from the Gorge ferry to Leliyn. One night per camp. Walking fee, camps, ferry and briefing are separate checkouts. Not a first casual Nitmiluk visit.
- 9
Scenic flights
Paid · Gorge sector · mobility / heat alternative
Commercial helicopters operate from the Gorge sector. Useful when heat or mobility rules out a long walk. They do not replace park rules or swim signs on the ground.
