Gorge vs Leliyn: two sectors, one park
Why Nitmiluk Gorge and Leliyn (Edith Falls) are two visits — 90 km apart, different roads, different products. How to pick, and why same-day both usually fails.

Leliyn (Edith Falls)

People treat Nitmiluk like one car park with two names. It is not. Katherine Gorge and Leliyn (Edith Falls) are two public sectors of the same national park, on different roads, with different desks and different swimming rules.
If you only remember the number: about 90 km between the precincts. From Katherine town, the Gorge is about 30 km on Gorge Road. Leliyn is about 60 km via the Stuart Highway and Edith Falls Road.
This article is unofficial orientation. Live swim status, roads and hours still come from NT Parks signs and the Katherine-region park-open page.
Two car parks, two roads

Gorge Road is the sealed road northeast of Katherine to the Nitmiluk Centre. Edith Falls Road leaves the Stuart Highway north of town. They do not meet inside the park for casual drivers.
Wet-season flooding at Maud Creek can close Gorge Road. Leliyn has its own access questions. Check roadreport.nt.gov.au for the road you are actually using.
What each sector is for

Leliyn upper pools / falls

Gorge: maps, ranger desk, cruises, canoes, Baruwei, Southern walks, Jatbula start. This is where first-timers should stand first.
Leliyn: short loop, plunge pool and upper pools when signed open, drive-in campground, Jatbula finish. There is no Centre desk. Read the signs you drove in with.
The same-day failure
The classic bad plan: Gorge cruise at 11, Leliyn “on the way back to Darwin” at 3. You will see a lot of bitumen and not much sandstone.
If you insist on both in one calendar day, you are choosing driving as the activity. Say that out loud before you promise kids a swim and a boat.
The two-day default
Day 1 Gorge. Day 2 Leliyn. Sleep in Katherine. That is the itinerary on this site. Jatbula is a different week, not day 3 of a long weekend unless you already hold bookings.
Swimming is not a tie-breaker you invent
Gorge 1 is permanently closed to swimming and canoeing. Leliyn swimming is survey-and-sign. If Leliyn is closed, you do not get a consolation dip at the Gorge jetty.
Pick the sector for the product that is actually open today. Then stop.
Side-by-side planning
Access: Gorge is 30 km on Gorge Road; Leliyn is 60 km via the Stuart and Edith Falls Road. Between them: about 90 km. No shuttle for day visitors.
Desk: Gorge has the Nitmiluk Centre. Leliyn has signs. Screenshot maps in Katherine.
Best first visit: Gorge. Best signed swim: Leliyn when open. Best after a cruise: Katherine shade, not a second sector.
Families and heat
Kids plus heat plus two sectors is how the day becomes a highway. Pick one: boat or signed swim. Eat before anyone is hangry.
If the loop is shortened or the pool is closed, the lookout still counts. Do not scramble around tape for a better waterfall photo.
Where this sits in a Nitmiluk plan
Print the two-day Gorge + Leliyn itinerary. Sleep in Katherine. Re-check park-open, roads and swim signs each morning.
Jatbula is a different week. Read that trail page only if you hold bookings.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I do both sectors in one day?
You can drive it. You should not plan it as a first visit. You will spend the cool hours on the highway and the hot hours in a car park. Two days from Katherine is the sensible product.
Which sector should I pick if I only have one morning?
Gorge if you want the Centre, a cruise or Baruwei. Leliyn if swimming is likely open and you came for falls. They are not interchangeable icons.
Does Jatbula connect them for day visitors?
No. Jatbula is a booked 62 km multi-day walk with a ferry start. It is not a same-day shortcut between car parks.
Is there a shuttle between the Gorge and Leliyn?
There is no regular public transport into either precinct. Jatbula walkers arrange their own finish transfer. Day visitors drive or take a commercial tour that names the sector.
If Leliyn swimming is closed, should I still go?
Only if you accept a lookout or shortened loop as the product. Do not invent a swim at the Gorge jetty as consolation.
