Katherine or Darwin: where to sleep for Nitmiluk
Katherine is the Nitmiluk sleep-and-fuel town. Darwin is a fly-in about 3.5 hours north. How to choose a base without turning the Gorge into a 14-hour day.

The stay question is usually asked backwards. People book a Darwin hotel because the flight lands there, then try to “fit Nitmiluk in” as a day trip. That can be done. It is a long day. It is a poor first visit.
Katherine is the town that makes the park make sense. Fuel, food, a bed, then a 30 km morning to the Centre. Darwin stays in the plan as the airport.
This is unofficial planning. Official camping is never affiliated on this site. Commercial Katherine and Darwin beds may be.

Sleep here if you want a cool Gorge morning. Fuel here. Buy the Visitor Pass on Wi-Fi here. Screenshot maps here. The precinct is not a town.
Peak June–August beds sell out. Book the room when you book the cruise, not the night before the lookout.
Darwin is a fly-in
Land, hire a car or join a tour, then decide whether tonight is Katherine. If you stay in Darwin and drive down at 8 am, you will meet the heat at the Centre.
The Darwin overnight itinerary on this site exists because the 14-hour day trip is how people arrive cooked and leave having seen a car park.
Camping is a different product
Leliyn drive-in and bush camps: parkbookings.nt.gov.au before arrival. Gorge Tourist Precinct: Nitmiluk Tours. Jatbula camps: parkbookings plus walking fee plus ferry. None of those replace a Katherine motel if you cannot get a site.
This site never takes commission on official camping.
How to choose in one minute
One Gorge morning: Katherine the night before. Both sectors: two Katherine nights. Fly-in with two nights: Darwin arrival, Katherine sleep, Gorge day, Darwin return. Jatbula: Katherine or Gorge precinct the night of the briefing — plus a finish plan at Leliyn.
Fuel, Wi-Fi and last services
Treat both precincts as no bowser. Fuel in Katherine both directions. Buy the Visitor Pass on hotel Wi-Fi. Screenshot park-open, roadreport and both sector maps.
There is no regular public transport into the park. You drive, join a commercial tour, or walk Jatbula with a booked finish transfer.
Failure modes
Darwin 8 am departure → heat at the Centre. Fix: sleep in Katherine.
Leliyn “on the way to the airport” → you miss the flight or the walk. Fix: it is not on the way.
No fuel because “the park will have some” → you are wrong. Fix: Katherine both ways.
Where this sits in a Nitmiluk plan

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
How far is Darwin from Nitmiluk?
About 3.5 hours Darwin to Katherine, plus another 30 km to the Gorge. Leliyn is not a useful “on the way to the airport” stop if you already used the cool morning.
Should I camp at the Gorge?
Gorge Tourist Precinct is commercial via Nitmiluk Tours. Park-managed bush and Leliyn camps are parkbookings only, booked before arrival. Most mixed groups sleep in Katherine.
Is a Darwin day tour a good idea?
It is a good idea if you refuse to sleep in Katherine and accept one sector, one activity, and a long coach day. It is a bad idea if you still expect Leliyn plus Baruwei plus a sunset helicopter.
Do I need a 4WD to stay in Katherine and visit?
Not for the main Gorge precinct or Leliyn in normal sealed conditions. Check roadreport. Remote bush and canoe access is more demanding.
How many Katherine nights do I need?
One night before a single Gorge morning. Two nights if you want Gorge then Leliyn. Jatbula needs buffer nights plus a finish plan at Leliyn.
