Baruwei Loop
Area: Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge)
Guide updated · Track conditions, fees, swimming status, ferry times and closures change…
Continues along the escarpment from the Baruwei climb for a half-morning of gorge-country walking. Same start node as the lookout. Still a heat walk. Confirm the signed loop versus longer Southern links before you commit.
- Grade 3 — escarpment loop, heat and uneven rock
- About 2 hours typical
- About 4.8–4.9 km loop
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: Walkers who want more than the lookout but not a Southern overnight
Distance, grade, time, swimming status, ferry times and open/closed status change — verify on official NT Parks Nitmiluk pages and parkbookings.nt.gov.au before you go.

Where you start
Near Nitmiluk Centre — same node as Baruwei Lookout
Start at the signed Baruwei network near the Nitmiluk Centre. Confirm on the map which arrows are the Loop versus Windolf / Southern links. Shared bike sections apply. Collect a map at the desk.
How to get there
- Same sealed access as Baruwei Lookout: Katherine → Gorge Road ~30 km. Visitor Pass if required. Check park-open and roads.
- Fill every bottle at the Centre. There is no kiosk on the escarpment.
- If arriving after 10 am in the build-up or wet, the shorter lookout is usually the better walk.
How to do it (step by step)
- Start early. Walk the signed loop only unless you have a separate plan and water for a longer Southern day.
- Stay on marked track. Shared with mountain bikes on some sections.
- Rest in any shade. Do not shortcut cliff edges.
- If you lose the loop markers, stop and reverse to the last signed junction. Do not invent a descent to the river.
- Return to the Centre for food, shade and a decision: cruise, swim (if signed open), or drive — not “one more unnamed gully.”
What to expect
The Loop is Baruwei with more escarpment. Views continue; shade does not magically appear. Published figures are about 4.8–4.9 km and about two hours — [VERIFY] on the official walks page.
It is the right “we have a free morning at the Gorge and we already saw the lookout from the cruise jetty” walk.
Logistics
Same precinct, same pass rules, same heat window as the lookout. The only extra logistics are map-reading: do not drift onto Windolf or Jawoyn Valley without meaning to.
Water from tanks/river on longer Southern links must be boiled. On the Loop, carry what you need from the Centre.
Hazards
Heat, rock, bikes, and navigational overconfidence. If the group is mixed-ability, the Lookout return is the kinder product.
Turnaround
If you are unsure you are still on the Loop, stop and reverse to the last signed junction. Inventing a descent to the river is how people meet closed water and crocodiles.
Who this walk is for
Good fit: walkers who already understand the Centre precinct, started early, and want more than the lookout without a Southern overnight. Poor fit: mixed groups with a tired child, anyone treating it as a warm-up for Windolf on the same hot morning.

Extra tips
- Good second step after a previous-day lookout, or a single morning if you are fit and started early.
- Do not combine with a same-day Leliyn sector visit unless you enjoy 90 km of extra driving in heat.
- Overnight Southern camps are a different booking — Dunlop Swamp, Smitt Rock, Eighth Gorge (Category B, limits apply).
Often paired with Southern Walks— only if energy and weather allow.

FAQ — Baruwei Loop
Tap a question to expand the answer.
How long is the Baruwei Loop?
Published as about 4.8–4.9 km and about two hours, Grade 3. It is still a heat walk. Verify distance and grade on the official walks page.
Is the Loop the same as Windolf / Southern walks?
No. The Loop is the escarpment circuit from the same Baruwei node. Windolf and Southern links are longer, separately signed, and overnight camps need parkbookings. Do not drift onto them without water and a plan.
When should I skip the Loop?
If you arrived after 10 am in the build-up or wet, if anyone is already struggling on the lookout climb, or if water is low. The lookout return is the kinder product.
