Southern Walks network

Area: Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge)

The Gorge sector’s deeper walking system: Windolf toward Pat’s Lookout / Southern Rockhole, Butterfly Gorge, Lily Ponds, Waleka, Yambi, Jawoyn Valley, Eighth Gorge and linking camps. Day returns or pre-booked overnights at Dunlop Swamp, Smitt Rock or Eighth Gorge. Spectacular when you respect heat, water and cultural sites.

Do not pair: Do not pair a Southern day with Leliyn, Jatbula talk and a late Darwin drive. One named objective from the Centre.

Turnaround: Pick one named day (often Windolf toward Southern Rockhole) and a clock-time reverse before you leave shade. Automatic reverse: heat illness, closed water you were counting on, or a child who has stopped drinking.

  • Stacking Windolf after Baruwei Loop because the first climb felt easy in the car park.
  • Inventing an Eighth Gorge overnight without a booking, stove plan or boil water.

Official vs the sign: NT Parks pages and on-site swimming / track signs win over this guide.

  • Grade 3–5 depending on link — verify each track
  • Half day to overnight (pre-booked camps only)
  • Day returns to multi-day (Windolf ~9 km return range; longer links to Eighth Gorge)
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Experienced walkers who want gorge views, rock art at a respectful distance, and optional overnight

Distance, grade, time, swimming status, ferry times and open/closed status change — verify on official NT Parks Nitmiluk pages and parkbookings.nt.gov.au before you go.

Where you start

Nitmiluk Centre — Southern / Windolf signed network

All published Southern starts are near the Nitmiluk Centre. Collect a map. Choose one named day (for example Windolf toward Southern Rockhole) or a booked overnight. Do not wander off the signed walks without bookings and water.

How to get there

  1. Same Gorge Road access as Baruwei. Visitor Pass if required. Overnight camps must be booked on parkbookings.nt.gov.au before arrival — Category B style bush camps, limits apply.
  2. No on-site payment. Display camping tags. Fuel stoves only in many areas — verify fire rules.
  3. Check swimming status if Southern Rockhole or other water is part of your plan. Seasonal flow and crocodile surveys decide, not this website.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Pick one objective. A common day is Windolf toward Pat’s Lookout / Southern Rockhole (~9 km return range — [VERIFY]).
  2. Start at first light in the build-up and wet. Carry 3 L+ and a real hat.
  3. Jawoyn Valley rock art: respectful distance only. Do not touch. Do not publish close-up “secret site” instructions.
  4. If Southern Rockhole or other water is part of the plan, read swim signs. Seasonal flow and crocodile surveys decide, not last year’s photo.
  5. Overnight only at Dunlop Swamp, Smitt Rock or Eighth Gorge if you hold a booking. Water from tanks/river — boil first.
  6. Return the way you came on day walks. Limited overnight bail-outs.

What to expect

Southern walks are where the Gorge sector stops being a cruise jetty. Expect heat, rock, optional seasonal swims where signed, and Jawoyn rock art that you view from a respectful distance. Grades span 3–5 depending on the link — read the official walks page for the track you actually intend.

Windolf toward Southern Rockhole is the usual “day with a destination.” Eighth Gorge and the named bush camps are for people who booked.

Logistics and overnight rules

Day walks: Centre start, map, water, early start, return the same way. Overnight: parkbookings.nt.gov.au only, Category B fees on top of any Visitor Pass, walking fees if the booking system applies them to your product — [VERIFY] the live cart. Numbers are limited.

Do not camp at lookouts, rockholes or “a flat bit of sand.” Rangers manage this landscape with Traditional Owners. Informal camps are not allowed.

Hazards

Heat on the plateau is worse than the river breeze at the jetty. Rock platforms get very hot. Gullies can be slippery after rain. Treat unsigned water as crocodile habitat. Stay off cultural sites.

Turnaround

Day walks reverse on the same track. Overnight walkers have limited options — that is why bookings are capped. If a storm, fire or medical issue develops, follow ranger advice. Do not descend unnamed cliffs to “find the river cruise.”

Who this network is for

Good fit: walkers who have already done Baruwei, can read a map, and will pick one named objective. Poor fit: first hour at the Centre, anyone hoping to “see all the gorges” on foot in a day, groups without 3 L+ water.

If you only have one Gorge morning, Baruwei is the better product. Southern walks reward people who already understand the precinct.

Extra tips

  • Southern bush camps are quieter than Jatbula and the Gorge tourist precinct — that is why people book them.
  • Mountain-bike shared sections: walk predictably.
  • If you only have one Gorge morning, Baruwei is the better product. Southern walks reward people who already understand the precinct.

Often paired with Baruwei Lookout— only if energy and weather allow.

FAQ — Southern Walks

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What is a realistic Southern day walk?

Windolf toward Pat’s Lookout / Southern Rockhole is the usual named day (about 9 km return range — [VERIFY]). Eighth Gorge and the bush camps are for people who booked. Do not stack Windolf with Baruwei Loop and a Leliyn transfer.

Can I camp at a lookout or rockhole?

No. Overnight only at Dunlop Swamp, Smitt Rock or Eighth Gorge if you hold a parkbookings booking. Informal camps are not allowed.

Are Southern camps the same as Jatbula camps?

No. Southern bush camps are a Gorge-sector overnight product. Jatbula is the separate Gorge-to-Leliyn trail with its own ferry, walking fee and camp sequence.
