Jatbula overview itinerary

Best for: People deciding whether to book — read the official trail notes as well

A planning skeleton for the 62 km Gorge-to-Leliyn walk: briefing and ferry, one night per camp, long Sandy Camp day, finish logistics at Leliyn. Book official products first; then use this to sequence the human parts.

Do not walk this itinerary without live bookings and the official Jatbula notes. Dates, fees, ferry and sodden-track comments change.

If the bookings already feel like too much paperwork, that is a useful signal — choose day walks.

This page sequences the week. It is not a permit, not a ferry ticket, and not a substitute for the ranger briefing.

Heat is the main medical risk. Day 4 toward Sandy Camp is usually longer than it looks on paper. Train with a full pack before you pay non-refundable logistics.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NT Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Months ahead

    Book everything you need

parkbookings walking fee + camps. Nitmiluk Tours ferry. Finish transfer or car shuffle. Visitor Pass if required. Peak June–August sells out. Confirm the live walking-fee table (published $25 per person per night, cap $125 for 6+ days — [VERIFY]).

  2. Week before

Weigh the pack and the plan

Train with the actual pack weight in heat. Print or offline every booking. Agree who holds ferry confirmation, camp tags and Leliyn keys. Tell someone your camps and finish window.

  3. Arrival day

    Katherine or Gorge precinct

Register parking if required. Attend the mandatory briefing. Charge devices you will not charge again. Weigh the pack honestly. Buy last food in Katherine — there is no shop on the trail.

  4. Day 1

Ferry → Biddlecombe Cascades ~8.3 km

Start after the booked ferry only. Shortest day is still a heat day. Camp the booked site only. Treat or boil water. Fuel stove if that is the rule.

  5. Days 2–3

Crystal Falls → 17 Mile Falls

About 11 km then about 10 km. Early starts. Respect art sites at a distance. Crystal Falls has had platform upgrades — still book the official site. Do not skip a camp because you feel strong.

  6. Day 4

    Sandy Camp ~16.8 km

The long day. Start earlier than you think. This is where untrained packs fail. Rest in shade. If someone is going backwards medically, follow briefing / ranger advice — do not invent a shortcut creek.

  7. Days 5–6

    Sweetwater → Leliyn

About 11.1 km to Sweetwater; optional 4.5 km to Leliyn. Leliyn camping is a separate booking. Execute the pickup plan you made in month zero. Swim only where signed open.

Packing

  • Pack that actually fits 5–6 days
  • Water treatment
  • Fuel stove
  • PLB / satellite messenger (optional but serious)
  • 3 L+ carrying capacity + electrolytes
  • UPF shirt + wide-brim hat
  • First-aid / blister kit
  • Paper map + offline Avenza
  • Admin pouch: bookings, ferry, pass, parking note

Kit searches live on the gear hub · park fees never affiliated.

Parking & access tips

  • Long-term parking at the Ranger Station / Centre as directed — register.
  • Finish car at Leliyn only if someone can move it legally and you planned the keys.
  • Do not leave the start-car plan until the morning of the ferry.
  • Leliyn has no reliable phone — the pickup person needs a clock time, not a “we’ll call.”

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Unbooked start
  • Skipping a camp
  • Wet-season attempts
  • Treating this as a Kakadu weekend add-on

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Experienced pack walkers in the dry-season window
  • People who can book months ahead
  • Groups who already have a finish transfer

Admin that is part of the walk

  • Visitor Pass if required — not a walking permit
  • Walking fee + each night’s camp on parkbookings
  • Nitmiluk Tours ferry + briefing
  • Leliyn night booked separately if you want one

Decision gates

  • If bookings are incomplete: you are not walking
  • If someone has not trained in heat: they stay in Katherine
  • If the trail is listed open but sodden after a long wet: read the official notes, not a forum

Related trail guides

  • Jatbula TrailSignature multi-day walk on a traditional Jawoyn route along the western Arnhem Land escarpment edge: sandstone plateau, woodland, monsoon-forest pockets and riverine camps. One night only at each designated camp. Start after a booked ferry; finish at Leliyn. Numbers are strictly limited.
  • Leliyn TrailThe strong day icon of the Leliyn (Edith Falls) sector: a short loop with views of the falls and Edith River, plus upper-pool swimming when signed open. May shorten to lookout / upper pool only in the wet. This is a different park visit from the Gorge — about 90 km by road.
